We have been interested in and actively growing herbs, fruit and vegetables at Polvean nurseries
since the early 80's. Originally based in Lancashire now in the milder counties of Devon and Cornwall.
Long before growing your own herbs, vegetables and fruit was seen as trendy, people who respected country traditions
and recognised the undeniable link between ourselves and the soil, plants and animals around us have been practising organic farming.
We owe it to ourselves remember we are not many generations removed from a peasant culture where todays consumerist
chemically treated, plastic wrapped foodstuffs would have seemed alien.
Herbs
are the most wonderfully diverse and useful plants, coming in all
shapes, sizes, textures, colours and perfumes. They appeal to every sense being beautiful to look at, often highly perfumed with many textured leaves.
They are multifunctional also many herbs have an ancient medicinal use which have been proven by modern science to be not just "old wives tales" they also are essential in any proper cooks cupboard lending flavour to all and sundry.
“My enthusiasm for using herbs comes from a long family tradition,”
Danny explains. “My grandmother, Eleanor Brown, was a keen country cook in the
thirties and forties. My mother not only inherited her love of cooking
but was also a keen gardener, growing most of her own vegetables and herbs.
I have followed suit by setting up my Nursery.”
Polvean Nursery's organic seeds are certified by the Soil Association
